If you love friends as much as I do you, then you know all about Unagi and it's power of being able to practically predict the future. Now if you google the word Unagi, it actually means Freshwater eel butttttttttt Ross' definition of Unagi (the one I prefer) is a state of total awareness. Literally like having a spider sense.
Imagine being able to focus solely on the task at hand, how much more productive would you be? how much more efficient? Being able to control your mind to remove the background thoughts, noise and just zero in on completely smashing your goals and living your best life seems like a superpower, but in all honesty we all have the ability to harness the power of....... Unagi ( said in Ross' Voice) It just takes some time and a lot of meditation. Did you just eye roll? trust me I probably would of done the same thing a few years ago. Any time I used to hear the word meditation, I would literally think of vegans, religious people and yoga addicts! but I'm here to tell you, you don't need to be vegan, into yoga or even believe in God, if you want to take back control of your mind, feel good, more focused, sleep better and just be more zen, then meditation is for you.
Taking away all your preconceptions about meditation let's start at the beginning, Meditation in its purest form, is that act of focusing on a singular thought of a positive nature. You could focus on feelings of love or happiness, on gratitude or even just simply focusing on
your breath. At first you'll be find your mind jumping around thought to thought but hang on in there, it's through continued practice that you'll be able to hold your focus during meditation. Don't feel bad for feeling distracted or allowing your mind to wonder, its natural for that to happen, trust me, just try to bring your focus onto your breath, focusing on the warmth of your breath when you breath out and the sensation of the cool air when you breath in. After a few weeks your meditations will energise you in a way that Red Bull never could and with continued practise maybe you could even master Unagi.
So you ready to give it a shot?
Whenever you feel ready to take the plunge I have created a little guide below to just help you along the way, tweak, adjust and do what feels right for you. I genuinely hope you enjoy every moment of the process.
Zen master Guide
To start find the most comfortable position for you ( if possible try laying down on your back eyes closed and palms facing the ceiling, allow your legs to fall naturally into a position)
Focus on your breathing, breath in for 2 seconds, hold for 2 seconds, breath out for 2 seconds, hold for 2 seconds and repeat for 4 cycles, count slowly try using one Mississippi two Mississippi to ensure you are breathing slowly and calmly
Scan your body for any areas of tension, can you feel any areas that feel tight or you are unknowingly holding onto tension, breath into those areas focus on one area at at time ensuring you are focusing your breath into that area, allow your breath to melt away any tension and allow your body to relax and release any negativity it is holding on to . Picture a light of healing warming your body on every inhale and imagine all that you don’t need, stress negativity and pain being removed from your body with every exhale
Once you feel you have removed any tension you are holding onto, imagine a lotus flower of light energy resting on your belly button, picture the lotus flower blooming and opening on every inhale and every exhale the flower closes, use the lotus flower as your source of healing. Focussing on nothing but the lotus flower, allow any distracting thoughts to melt away and be blown away in the breeze of your healing breath.
5. Enjoy your meditation time, the only time in the day you get to give that beautiful mind of yours some TLC.
Remember to make meditation your own, I play some mellow music in the background to help me focus, you may find lighting a candle may help you get in the zone, do whatever feels right for you and remember that there is no one right way to meditate.
